01 Origins
Why does yogurt keep appearing in the story of longevity?
From research into fermentation bacteria to the story of gut health and longevity. Meiji continues that journey with the symbiotic LB81 bacterial culture.[1,2]
The birth of a longevity hypothesis
Ilya Metchnikoff's Nobel Prize-winning research demonstrated that Bulgaria's unusually high proportion of people living beyond 100 was linked to daily yogurt consumption, and that the lactic acid bacteria in yogurt helped inhibit age-related toxins in the gut.[1]Meiji Bulgaria Yogurt LB81 Drinking yogurt

What is LB81?
And why does it matter?
LB81 is the collective name for two strains: L. bulgaricus 2038 and S. thermophilus 1131.[4] During fermentation, they support each other's growth.[2]
A small partnership. A distinctive character.
How do the two strains work together?
S. thermophilus produces formic acid to support L. bulgaricus. In return, L. bulgaricus produces amino acids and peptides that help S. thermophilus grow. This is mutual support during fermentation.[2]L. bulgaricus2038
